Position context

The ERA Chair “iSTARS - Informatics and Statistical Tools for the Advancement of Research Success” project, of Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal), is actively looking for a Project and Science Manager (PSM), who shall be responsible for the management of this project, recently awarded by the EU for a 6-year period. iSTARS aims to enact a true transformational change that will promote excellence in research and competitiveness in acquisition of funding, by recruiting a researcher for the ERA Chair position and its team.

We are seeking highly motivated individuals who are passionate for science, project and team management, and experience in training/teaching, and who are willing to work and make a difference at the interface of training, research and project management. You are expected to actively contribute to the success and shaping the expansion of Science and Project Management area in interplay between Data Science, Data Analysis, Societal needs and Research in Health. You will start the program by supporting the implementation and recruitment process, and also by supporting existing research projects in order to integrate and learn about the practice of research at FMUL.

Project and Science Manager responsibilities

You will be responsible for the daily implementation and management of the iSTARS ERA Chair Program, and training in Medicine project management, under the direct supervision of the coordination team and the ERA Chair holder. You will play a pivotal liaison role with all internal and external stakeholders, including critical technical and administrative issues for the development of the project, spanning all subprojects (Work Packages - WPs) and tasks for a successful ERA Chair project implementation. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Overall and detailed planning and definition of tasks according to the iSTARS plan;
  • Monitoring the overall progress regarding milestones and deliverables;
  • Operationalization and timing of all activities and tasks of the project;
  • Identification of any unanticipated risks;
  • Promote and organize training activities related to scientific project management, science communication and dissemination, as well as training/teaching in your areas of competence;
  • Participate in the research projects of iSTARS, including plans for data management;
  • Acting as the centre of communication between all internal and external stakeholders, including:
    • Liaison with the coordination team and the assigned EC Project Advisor;
    • Assisting all WP and Task Leaders;
    • Ensuring the involvement of the Heads of the appropriate internal research support structures;
  • Promote and organize training activities concerning research project management, science communication and outreach;
  • Prepare the technical interim and final reports, as well as topics for presentation, compilation and analysis of documentation pertaining to the project deliverables;
  • Responsibility for project management indicators, as well as other key performance indicators, such as dissemination and outreach, and the project impact;
  • Collaborating in the submission of financial reports;

The position is based at the Faculdade de Medicina, but opportunities for occasional short-term travel will be available.

Background and experience required

Essentials Skills & Qualifications

  • Sound scientific background: degree in a relevant research field for iSTARS (see scientific area) or scientific project management;
  • Written and spoken English proficiency (Portuguese proficiency is not mandatory);
  • Leadership, exceptional organizational skills and high attention to detail;
  • Initiative and ability to work independently;
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills;
  • Team spirit and ability to work effectively with dynamic and diverse staff;
  • High level of dedication and resilience;
  • Curiosity, enthusiasm, creativity and empathy in human relations.

Other valued skills and qualifications

  • International experience or international exposure to best practices in project management;
  • Experience/ knowledge in project management processes and tools;
  • Experience/ knowledge of principles and techniques of EU projects planning and procedures;
  • Experience/knowledge in science dissemination and societal outreach activities;
  • Experience/knowledge in international grant application and bid management processes;
  • Experience/ knowledge in non-academic collaborations and knowledge transfer activities;

Position conditions

“Contrato de Trabalho em Funções Públicas a Termo Resolutivo Certo” (fixed term public service contract) with a term corresponding to the intended period of the project, up to 6 years. The contract may be renewed one time, for the same or shorter period, as long as the total duration does not exceed 6 years.

Evaluation and Selection

Applications will be evaluated by a selection panel. After a first selection round, applicants may be asked to submit further documents and will be invited for an interview (possibly online).
